A very monumental event recently transpired in my life, and I feel like I must share it with anyone who has an interest in my musical endeavors. For some time now, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect acoustic guitar. In my search for “the one”, I played Taylors, Martins Seagulls, Gibsons, Breedloves, ANYTHING I could get my hands on. The owner of my local music store, About Music, had a wide selection of acoustics and stocked more Larrivee guitars than I had ever seen on one wall. I would go in for hours at a time and play, trying to get a feel for different tone woods and find each guitar’s specific voice.
Then a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a Larrivee that had never caught my eye before. It was an L-03 special edition with a sitka spruce soundboard (go figure) and walnut back and sides. It was love at first listen. From the first time I played this guitar, I couldn’t get over it. I’m not even going to try to describe it’s unique sound in words, you’ll just have to keep an ear out on new recordings or come hear it in person. Beacause it is Canadian made, American played, I had to name it Neil. Even weeks in to my ownership of this beautiful instument, I still wake up in the morning, give it a strum, and can’t believe it’s actually mine.
Neil K. Balke
Oh, and I’ve got a few shows lined up that would be the perfect opportunity to meet Neil. I hope to see you there!
